| Detroit artist
and designer Andy Kem creates
functional art from wood and man-made wood products, predominantly
derived from the layering, or lamination, of these materials. While
influenced by the "no flat surfaces" principle of automotive
design, Kem's work also reflects a language built from a unique
approach and exploration of industry techniques such as CNC cutting,
vacuum bagging, and rapid prototyping.
laminat
includes Kem's tables, chairs, lights, cork “tiles",
and other functional and decorative elements that represent his
seven year investigation of the process and technique of making
furniture and functional art and the critical thinking required
in the design of objects.
Andy Kem
is a graduate from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.
He has shown extensively in the metro Detroit area and has also
been commissioned to develop designs for specific sites. He was
awarded first place at the 2008 Design Quest Furniture Competition.
